Frequently Asked Questions

Psychotherapy, commonly known as counseling or therapy, helps individuals, couples, or families find ways to improve communication, resolve issues, and strengthen relationships. A therapist’s role is to facilitate change and foster growth clients want to see.

  • Relationship conflict
  • Communication problems
  • Anxiety
  • Parenting challenges
  • Identity and/or sexuality exploration/formation
  • Depression
  • Trauma (physical, sexual, emotional, societal, and/or intergenerational family trauma)
  • Perfectionism
  • Stress
  • Grief or loss
  • Life’s transitions (i.e. divorce, new parent, new job/career, relocation, etc.)

The first session allows for both you and your therapist to get to know each other, review initial paperwork, discuss your rights as a client, and gather more information that will help build goals and needs for therapy.

A typical therapy session is an opportunity for both you and your therapist to work on your therapy goals, which can be:

  • skill building
  • building insight into patterns
  • reacquainting oneself to the purpose of why we experience emotions
  • role-playing conversations to have
  • identifying needs
  • processing and organizing your thoughts aloud
  • re-defining therapy goals as needed
  • grounding and practicing being present, which can include listening to music, doing a puzzle, or going for a walk

Like any relationship, it takes time to build trust and connection. It can feel a bit like a roller coaster — there’ll be highs that feel exciting and lows that feel uncomfortable or unsettling.

What’s different here is that my goal is to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and truly heard — where you can share your thoughts, feelings, and perspective without fear of judgment.

Sometimes therapy can feel harder before it gets easier. But no matter what comes up, the goal stays the same: to help you move toward what matters most to you. And I’ll be right there with you through every step of that journey.

It depends.

The frequency of sessions is best determined between you and your therapist. It is typical for sessions to start off weekly or every other week. As you start to see improvements, we can work on gradually reducing the frequency of sessions.

You may... become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and patterns. You may have fewer symptoms than when you first started therapy. You may also feel like life and relationships are more manageable. This may take time, which is part of the therapeutic process.

That’s a completely valid question — and an important one. Like any relationship, therapy works best when there’s a sense of connection, trust, and alignment.

If something doesn’t feel quite right — whether it’s the approach we’re using or how we’re working together — you’re always welcome to bring that into the conversation. We can explore what’s not feeling like a match and talk about possible adjustments or, if needed, I can help connect you with another therapist who might be a better fit.

More than anything, I want you to get the support that truly works for you.
